Qualifications to Apply
Applicants must meet all of the following four criteria:
- Individuals who are foreign citizens.
*Excluding those who have permanent residency in Japan.
*Excluding those who have graduated from a Japanese high school (or secondary school). - Individuals who either have or expect to obtain the residence status of "College Student" pursuant to the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act.
- Individuals who have completed or expect to complete 12 years of school education in a foreign country by March 31, 2025, or individuals who have been deemed by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to be equally qualified as such individuals.
- Individuals who meet criteria ① or ② below.
① Must have taken the Japanese portion of the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)administered by the Japan Student Services Organization, and must have earned a total score of 50% or higher.
② Must have taken the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test Level N1 (which includes the former classification of Level 1) administered by Japan Educational Exchanges and Services, and must have earned a total score of 50% or higher, or must have passed the Level N2 test (formerly Level 2).

Selection Process
- Admission decisions are based on a general evaluation of the applicant's submitted documents, a short essay written in Japanese (except Department of Calligraphic Culture), practical exam (Department of Calligraphic Culture only), and an interview.
- The short essay must be 800 characters or less on an assigned topic. (The tools necessary for the practical exam in calligraphy will be provided by the University.)
- The interview is an individual interview, and will last approximately 15 minutes.

Individuals who have permanent residency in Japan, have a Japanese spouse or dependent, have a spouse or dependent in possession of permanent residency, long-term residents, and those with special permanent residence status are excluded.
- Individuals who either have or expect to obtain the residence status of "College Student" pursuant to the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act.
- Applicants must meet either of the following two criteria:
- Individuals who have completed 12 years of school education in a foreign country, or individuals who have been deemed by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to be equally qualified as such individuals. Individuals who have graduated or expect to graduate from a Japanese-language school by March 2025.
- Individuals who have graduated from Japanese high/secondary schools which are in accordance with the School Education Law, or those who expect to graduate by March 2025, and whose attendance at applicable elementary, junior high, high and secondary schools which are in accordance with the School Education Law totals less than three years.
- Applicants must have passed Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Level N2 or higher, J.TEST Level C or higher, or Japanese NAT-TEST Level 2 or higher.
❇︎Classes are held in Japanese, so applicants must have Japanese proficiency sufficient to understand classes. Applicants should be at Japanese-Language Proficiency Test Level N2 or higher.
